Fashion as Empowerment: How to Turn Comparison into Inspiration
Welcome you beautiful creatures! I hope your week is going well. Apparently, here in Minneapolis, Fall has gone back to bed. This week we’ve had toasty temps in the 80s. This didn’t stop me from ordering pumpkin spiced lattes though. Anyways, last week I spoke about how fashion can connect us in a lonely world. This week I want to address another issue that can isolate us….comparison. Ahhh yes, we know it well. Especially these days with social media. Comparison is at our finger tips with every scroll. So what if we could take something as ugly and disruptive as comparison and turn it into something useful and inspiring?
Empowerment: How To Turn Comparison Into Inspiration
When I quit working in Fashion to become a freelance videographer I was simultaneously beginning my journey as a Minimalist. So I went from most days being around all sorts of people to being just me, my computer and my dog Baloo (RIP). That eliminated one area of daily comparison, although Baloo did have some cute sweaters he’d wear sometimes. All that was left for me was my social media. As a newfound Minimalist who didn’t want “more”, I decided to cleanse my social media. I unfollowed most stylists, brands and designers to eliminate temptation to buy or to compare. I’m not going to lie, it felt pretty damn good.
A few years later when I decided to start a Fashion YouTube channel I tried my best to keep my serenity in tact. Trying not to submerge myself too quickly back into the world of fashion content. But over the years it slowly trickled it’s way back into my daily life. Some would say I conceded but I’d say I just learned how to embrace it in a different way.
With a more seasoned minimalist perspective, I was approaching the way I looked at fashion content differently. Instead of seeing it as something I don’t have, can’t have or want to have. I looked at it with appreciation and gratification. Seeing little nuggets of inspiration that I could take and implement with things I already had. Or taking something exquisite and translating it into my own style language.
I looked at Runway shows differently. Not seeing the pieces as something literal to be coveted but never attained. But as beautiful art created by the designer to be translated by anyone with their own perspective. Just like an artist would do with a painting. Meant to inspire, not to taunt. I took that perspective and put it towards all other content out there. It’s meant to inspire, not taunt.
We can re-frame these experiences as a source of inspiration that empowers and informs our own fashion journey. Fashion, when approached with the right mindset, can be a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment. Allowing there to be two truths. Celebrating the diversity of other’s personal style and at the same time embracing our own. Here’s how we can diminish comparison and contribute to empowerment.

Recognizing inspiration
Comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy or insecurity, making us believe that our style is inferior to others. I still struggle with this daily. However, by shifting my focus from comparison and looking at something with appreciation instead. And rather than viewing someone else's style as a standard to measure up to, I can then admire and see them as a collaborative friend. This then can inspire you to have your own translation or build in your confidence to go where you may have not gone before.
Embracing our differences
Inspiration can come from unexpected sources, and exploring different fashion aesthetics broadens your perspective on style. I’ve found by looking at each and every person’s style that I encounter with admiration instead of judgement has helped me. Not only with genuine human decency and connection. But has also had a major impact on my own personal style. You might find yourself inspired by the simple details in the most obscure places or people. The understated distressing of the jeans of a carpenter you run into at the hardware store. The effortlessly placed bandana scarf around the house painter’s neck. The combination of the Paw Patrol tee combined with high waist sophisticated trousers worn by your kid’s teach at conferences. Or that truck driver you said ‘Hello’ to at the gas station who had that steezy broken in work boots paired with raw denim jeans but a crisp white button up shirt. Experimenting with various aesthetics allows you to step out of your comfort zone and discover elements that resonate with your sense of self. By adopting an open-minded approach, you create a diverse and empowering fashion experience that is uniquely yours.
Learning your own language
The beauty of fashion lies in its ability to be interpreted differently by each individual. When I discovered that Fashion is not a literal thing, that each piece can be translated in many different ways and into many different styles….I was free. Think about it….how many different style types use a white button up shirt in their style. Same with jeans, same with sweaters, blazers, dresses…..ETC!!!!! Empowerment through fashion comes from embracing your personal interpretation and unique sense of style. Draw inspiration from others, but don't be afraid to add your own twist and adapt trends to fit your preferences. The way you combine colors, textures, and accessories is a form of art that expresses your individuality. When I began to listen to myself and understand my language it allowed for me to begin translating my style so others could hear what I was saying…..(wow, I really rode that analogy all the way home :-)
Support Each Other's Style Journey
Empowerment within fashion doesn't mean creating a competitive environment. We don’t have to compare or tear down to build ourselves up. By instead supporting and celebrating each other's style journey we create community. Giving a genuine compliment on someone’s outfit, asking for styling tips, or exchanging fashion ideas fosters that connection. Which builds confidence, collaboration and encourages everyone to embrace their authentic selves. By celebrating the diversity of style, we create a positive fashion culture where uniqueness is celebrated rather than diminished. And that, is true empowerment.

Your Weekly Homework
This week, let's turn comparison into inspiration. Identify three style icons that resonate with you, follow their fashion journey, and take note of what inspires you about their style. Experiment with one new element in your wardrobe that's influenced by your style icons. Remember, it's not about copying; it's about integrating inspiration into your unique style.

Dear Fashion Friends,
Thank you for joining me today. I know it’s hard not to compare and it’s important to remember NOBODY is perfect in this area. But with steps like the ones I spoke about today, hopefully we can help ourselves to at least not let it effect us as much. And anytime we feel it creeping in try out best to flip it into inspiration. It’s a working progress :-) Until next time….
Stay healthy, stay safe, love and support each other! xx
We’ll be chatting soon,
Emily
