The Therapeutic Closet: Organizing and Decluttering for Stress Relief

Welcome FF’s!!,

I hope your week is off to a good start. Here in Minneapolis the weather has finally changed to “sweata weatha”…hopefully it stays that way. You know me, I love a good layer. Anyways, speaking of layers we’re talking about decluttering our closets, again. I know, I know it’s a favorite topic of mine. But today I want to talk about how it can not only add function to our lives but also therapy. Yep! Lets get into this!

The Therapeutic Closet: Organizing and Decluttering for Stress Relief

Life can be absolute chaos at times….(stating the obvious Emily). So finding moments of tranquility and control can be a challenge. However, one often overlooked sanctuary lies within our own homes - the closet. Yep, yep, the closet! I’m not going to lie, when my closet feels organized and curated my life feels organized and curated. A well-organized closet not only streamlines our daily routine but also promotes a sense of calm, empowerment, and emotional well-being. Sound made up? Well then, you’ve never had an organized closet ;-) Let’s explore the therapeutic aspects of organizing and decluttering one's closet and see if it can help you on the path to some much need stress relief and tranquility.

Creating a Sense of Order

When our closet is in disarray, finding the perfect outfit is a daunting task. I don’t know about you, but in the mornings, the last thing I wanted to do, the last thing I had time to do, was dive headfirst into a fabric-filled abyss to find that one black long sleeve tee. Only to never find it (one of the most ANNOYING things in life, in my opinion) - wanting one specific thing for your outfit and not being able to find it ANYWHERE!!" But I digress) Organizing our wardrobe allows us to create a sense of order in our daily routines. By grouping clothing items by type or color, we gain a clear overview of our choices and spend less time searching for the perfect outfit or that long sleeve tee. Now you know exactly where to look. This newfound order instills a sense of control and reduces decision fatigue, leaving us with more mental space to focus on other aspects of our lives.

Letting Go of Emotional Clutter

Our wardrobe can sometimes become a repository of emotional clutter, holding onto garments that no longer serve us or bring joy. Marie Kondo, a renowned organizing consultant, advocates keeping only those items that spark joy. It may sound like hokum, but if you try it you’ll see. By embracing this principle, we liberate ourselves from the emotional baggage tied to our clothing, allowing us to move forward with a refreshed mindset and a lighter heart. Now that may be the most therapeutic of all, cleansing the bad to leave the good. Or it results in having a curated wardrobe that only holds joy and pieces that you love. Now, doesn’t that sound like a great way to start and end of your day?

Encouraging Self-Expression and Personal Growth

A well-organized and decluttered closet can serve as a canvas for self-expression and personal growth. When you can see the foundation of your wardrobe easily, it sparks creativity and ignites some outfits that are “fire”….(wow, hit that analogy out of the ball park ;-) By curating a wardrobe that reflects our authentic style, we gain a sense of empowerment and self-confidence. When we dress in a way that resonates with our inner self, we present ourselves to the world with authenticity and assurance. The act of organizing and decluttering becomes a journey of self-discovery, allowing us to explore our preferences, values, and evolving style. Wow, with that, you could save thousands in therapy costs ;-) (I joke, I’m a big advocate for therapy and anything that helps mental health)

Finding Zen in Small Rituals

Believe it or not, the process of organizing and decluttering our closet can be a meditative practice, providing an opportunity to find tranquility in small rituals. I’ve found that when I take the time to fold clothes mindfully and focus on that only it automatically puts me in a meditative state. So arrange items thoughtfully, and purge what no longer serves us can be an act of self-care. Engaging in these rituals quiets the noise of our busy lives and allowing for more mindfulness and peace into our daily routine.

In conclusion, the therapeutic benefits of organizing and decluttering your closet extends beyond a neat and tidy space. A well-organized wardrobe can be a catalyst for stress relief, emotional well-being, and personal growth. By creating order in our closet and letting go of emotional clutter, we gain a sense of control and purpose. The process of curating our wardrobe becomes a journey of self-discovery and self-expression, empowering us to present our authentic selves to the world. As we find zen in the small rituals of closet organization, we unlock the therapeutic potential of our space and cultivate a sense of calm and empowerment in our daily lives. If that doesn’t make you want to declutter and reorganize I don’t know what will ;-)

Quick Tips: Simple Steps to a More Mindful Closet

The ongoing donation box: This is something that helps me not only have an easy destination for pieces I’m considering donating. But keeps it organized for later assessment before officially passing them on to someone else.

Organize by Color: I’ve done it all but organizing by color seems to be the most satisfying way as well as the efficient because you always think about what color you need first. This way you see all the options you have for that color. I also organize by type within the color as well. This way you see all your white tees, white button ups, etc. And it just makes it so much nicer to look at.

Invest in Quality Hangers: This is something I have yet to do (because I hate the idea of wasting all the plastic hangers I already have). But I think if you can, do it! It makes all the difference for the visual appeal in your closet. As well as the care for your clothing. And if you really want to go for it getting proper hangers for each type of clothing, IE: sweater hangers, blazer hanger, etc.

Mindfully Hang Your Clothes: Treat folding and putting your clothes away at night like a meditation. Focus specifically on that task, take your time and take care. It will be a nice mind clearing activity and will also maintain the organization you worked so hard on.

Track I Am Enjoying

It’s just a song I most recently added to my favorites list. I just love the combos of the instruments and base. Just makes me want to break it down in the middle of the kitchen…..which I often do. Not super tranquil but gets you groov’n. Good for a big closet clean out day.
